নোবেল পুরস্কার বিজয়ী (nobel laureates) অর্থশাস্ত্রী অভিজিৎ ব্যানার্জী (Abhijit Banerjee) অনুযায়ী, যদি উনি ভারতে থাকতেন তাহলে ওনার পক্ষে নোবেল পুরস্কার জয় করা সম্ভব হতনা।  eisamay  উনি বলেন, এমন না যে ভারতে প্রতিভার অভাব আছে, কিন্তু এখানে বিশেষ প্রণালীর দরকার। এই কথা উনি জয়পুর লিটারেচার ফেস্টিভালে বলেন। উনি বলেন, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) তে পিএইচডি করা অনেক ছাত্র আছে। আমি অনেক কাজের শ্রেয় পেয়েছি, কিন্তু সেগুলো অন্যেরা করেছি। কোন এক ব্যাক্তির কাছে এটা হাসিল করে নেওয়া সম্ভব না। দেশের রাজনৈতিক স্থিতি নিয়ে অভিজিৎ ব্যানার্জী বলেন, ভারতে একটি ভালো বিরোধী দলের দরকার। শাসকদলেরও একটি ভালো বিপক্ষের দরকার পড়ে। খারাপ আর্থিক অবস্থা নিয়ে অভিজিত ব্যানার্জী বলেন, আপাতত এটা মনে হচ্ছে না যে আমরা খুব শীঘ্রই এই সমস্যা থেকে উঠতে পাড়ব। এখনো সময় লাগবে। আর্থিক অবস্থার উন্নতির জন্য আসতে আসতে কোন একটি জিনিষে কাজ করতে হবে। মুম্বাইতে জন্ম অভিজিৎ ব্যানার্জী কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আর জওহর লাল নেহরু বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে শিক্ষা প্রাপ্ত করেছেন। উনি হাওয়ার্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে পিএইচডি উপাধি পেয়েছেন আর MIT
